Where do you get your inspiration?

NWJ-I draw much of my inspiration from the hues, textures, and nuances of my natural surroundings. Whether a misty coastal scene, an eclectic, modern abstract, or a rustic, earthy landscape, I am able to create a uniquely vast range of painting styles and subjects. Since graduating from Virginia State University in 1997, with a degree in fine arts, I went on to become a K-4 Elementary Art teacher, inspiring my students by adorning the classrooms and hallways with bright, colorful artwork and characters I created. I taught for six years, and eventually left to pursue a full time career in art publishing. Which led me in 2017, to establishing my own personal home decor brand, Norman Wyatt Home.

After two decades of primarily creating wall art, it has led to my current partnership with Stylecraft, where I develop a complete Norman Wyatt Lifestyle Collection, including wall decor, lamps, furniture, mirrors, pillows, and accessories, all designed by the Artist.

Tell us more about your background?

NWJ- As native of Virginia, I currently reside with Maketah, his wife of twenty-five years, and our three creative children, Elisha, a graphic artist and aspiring fashion designer, Joshua, an animator and music producer, and Lydia, a ballerina and watercolorist.

I grew up in Surry County, a small town in Virginia. I’ve been an artist since childhood. As a kid, my Mom, who was a third grade teacher and later a Music Teacher, invested in a full set of encyclopedias for the family. I would sit on the family room floor for hours, fascinated by all of the artwork and photographs…just to learn how to draw certain subjects. This eventually led me to having a great knowledge of all types of wildlife, plants and nature.  After graduating from Virginia State University in 1997 with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art, there weren’t too many jobs available for an Artist, so I ended up  accepting a job as a K-4 Elementary Art Teacher…at the same Elementary school I had attended.

Have you always created furniture design and artwork?

I actually created a ton of artwork during my school breaks, which I submitted to acquire my first art publishing contract with a publisher in Vermont more than a decade ago. This same art  publisher introduced me to the world of art licensing. I ended up leaving teaching my sixth year, to become a full time Artist. I had something really unique, so within a year, my artwork was all over the place…retailers, online sources, catalogs, commercials, etc. I grew my presence in the wall decor industry over the years, becoming a top seller and having placement in most major retailers.  After so many years of concentrating primarily on wall art, I had the vision to establish the brand name Norman Wyatt Home in 2017…..with only faith, and a  trademarked brand name and logo.

Tell us about how you landed this collaboration with StyleCraft?

NWJ-At the very end of 2019, I  was looking around on Linkedin one night…and the Stylecraft page was brought to my attention. I loved everything that Stylecraft was doing. So, I searched for the CEO of Stylecraft,  and reached out to him directly. He loved all of my artwork and my social media, and asked me what I wanted to do with his company? My answer was, “Everything!’ I’ve always had a vision of designing so much more than wall art, so this licensing opportunity was perfect!

When did you first start working with StyleCraft?

NWJ-After initially connecting with the CEO in late 2019,  we officially started the relationship by just publishing a few pieces of wall decor. Then Covid hit in 2020, and not much happened as far as new development. In spring of 2021, Christy, the head of product development came across a ton of artwork and patterns of mine, and asked the CEO what the plans were with Norman. Before I knew it, my wife Maketah and I were flying to Memphis and Mississippi to meet everyone and discuss detailed plans for more.  It  was such an amazing fit….everything just seemed to be a perfect match, like it was meant to be. So, from Fall 2021 to now…I’ve been working with Christy and Brooke…designing, sketching, conceptualizing, developing ideas, selecting materials and colors, all preparing for the Norman Wyatt Home lifestyle launch!

Tell us about your collection with StyleCraft?

NWJ-The Norman Wyatt Home lifestyle collection debuts at April HPMKT with over 150 skus! I have designed new artwork, lamps, sideboards, chairs, tables, mirrors, pillows, accessories, etc.  The initial launch consists of three categories of items…Coastal, Glam, and Rustic/Earthy. There will be more categories of products added  as the collection evolves. Being an ongoing lifestyle collection, new products will constantly be added to the collection for each market.

Describe your creative design process?

NWJ-There is so much inspiration around us in our everyday lives, if you take the time to pay attention. I thought of how I used to bend and reshape paper clips as a child, and a new chair idea evolved.  I looked at the shape of a water bottle, and designed a lamp. I’m constantly thinking about new ideas…. how shapes, forms and materials relate…how I can create a new way to show a classic, traditional item. I usually sketch out and play around with the concepts on paper, until they resemble what I was seeing in my thoughts.

What is your favorite part about being a product designer?

NWJ-After 20 years of primarily creating wall decor for the industry, I’m extremely excited to be able to design other items that I’ve always imagined! It’s unreal…to be able to sketch out anything I can think of or imagine…to be brought to life, made into an actual product. The best part of being a product designer is knowing that someone out there, a person decorating or accenting a space, can find joy, pleasure, and pride in choosing something I created. Beside my original art and home accents designs I created a few top selling fabric collections with a textile company years ago. I also designed bedding and shower curtains as well. I actually want to find a partner for a Norman Wyatt Home fabric collection soon.

What made you embrace designing furniture?

NWJ-Or have you always been a product designer? Well, I guess I’ve always been a product designer at heart, but never had the opportunity to fully release my ideas. Even as a teen, I had a fascination with fashion,(I still do), so I would design my own sneakers on paper during classes. I actually had a custom jeans business going on in High School, painting on other students’ jeans. I love cars as well, so I would also sketch cars and SUVs that I thought should be made.  So as for furniture, I’ve always envisioned having a full decor brand and creating more than just artwork, so when Stylecraft gave me the opportunity to actually design furniture, it was a complete manifestation to my ultimate vision.

Do you have a favorite category to design?

NWJ-I don’t really have a favorite category to design, I love it all,  but I will say it seems like the lamp designs seem to flow very fluently. I had to explain to my family one day, that I wasn’t losing my marbles when they saw me drawing a lamp idea in the air. The concept was brewing, and I needed to figure it out. Once I get going creatively, the floodgates open. So, for the debut in April, I designed so many lamps that the owner of Stylecraft decided to give me an exclusive lamp line with the company.

What sets your collection at StyleCraft apart?

NWJ-Being that I have created wall decor for the industry for 20 years, I think I have so many creative elements to draw from. So, for my collection, I tried to focus on creating clean, fresh, modern products with a touch of artistic flair. One of my close designer friends refers to my look as “ Refined Artistry”.

What are your biggest motivations?

NWJ-Many in the industry may not know this, but I’m also an ordained Elder in Ministry. So my faith, and my relationship with God has been my never ending source of inspiration, fresh ideas, new concepts. etc. I grew up in a small rural town in Virginia, on a 20 acre stretch of family-owned land, so I still draw inspiration from the colors, textures, and sounds of nature. I’ve been blessed with a beautiful, amazing wife and three super talented children. My kids Elisha, Joshua, and Lydia, are also very  artistically creative in their own unique way. So I’m establishing a creative legacy here…..something my family can eventually take into the future and continue to grow.

Care to share a couple of fun facts about you?

NWJ-The artistic side of me has influenced most of what I do. I’m actually a drummer and percussionist. I also used to sing in a male group at my church. I also have been cutting hair since 9th grade.  Last, I’m a serious landscaper! Like, if I had time, I would start a landscaping business……it’s all art to me.  God  has put something in my hands…..and it shows up in many different ways.
