DNN: Building on your successful first collaboration with The Met, what were the learnings or insights that informed your approach to this second iteration? What’s different and what are you excited about with the new Façade collection?
AH: We discovered there was a growing appreciation and interest in incorporating more artistic elements into furniture. Leveraging over 100 years of woodworking expertise, we developed new techniques and processes to craft the Original Limited Edition Met Collection. Building on this artistry, we introduced architectural elements into the 2nd Met Collection, The Met Façade Collection.
This collection is designed to complement our standard customizable Abner Henry products, offering customization with over 600 wood finishes, 10 wood species, and more than 50 metal colors. Inspired by such a historically recognized building, the Façade Collection became highly relatable and versatile, suitable for a wide variety of designs.

DNN: Can you walk us through your inspiration and creative process behind The Met Façade Collection? How do you choose which pieces from the museum’s vast collection were going to be the inspiration for the furniture?
AH: We drew inspiration from the most profound aspects of Façade Architecture, focusing on the intricate details and timeless elegance that these structures embody. Our creative process began with a comprehensive analysis of these architectural elements, allowing us to identify key features that could be seamlessly integrated into furniture design.
We then developed a strategic approach to create specific items across our preferred categories, including a cocktail table, dining table, and console. This targeted selection ensured that each piece would not only serve a functional purpose but also act as a canvas for our artistic expression.
Once the initial designs were completed, we turned our attention to the finishing touches. We meticulously developed a range of finishes that subtly echoed the natural beauty of sandstone and the understated elegance of muted facades.
This attention to detail ensured that each piece exuded a sense of authenticity and harmony with the architectural inspiration. Furthermore, we incorporated various metal finishes to add a layer of differentiation and sophistication, enhancing the visual appeal and tactile experience of each item.

Our goal was to create a collection where each piece not only drew inspiration from the façade architecture but also contributed to a cohesive and unified aesthetic.
We wanted every item to resonate with the overall theme while possessing the distinctiveness and presence to stand alone as a statement piece. This balance of unity and individuality ensures that the collection can be seamlessly integrated into a variety of design schemes, offering versatility and timeless appeal.
Construction and craftsmanship
DNN: The intricate details and craftsmanship in this collection are beautiful. Tell me about the materials used and the level of craftsmanship involved in creating these architecturally-inspired furniture pieces? What makes the construction and materials luxurious?
AH: We use only the highest grade of materials at every step of the way. From curated and sustainably forested hardwoods to hand-forged metalwork and artisan finishing, each step is meticulously thought through to ensure exceptional quality.

For instance, the wood finish on the cocktail table is an oak finish that mimics the sandstone texture and tone of the façade. Additionally, the brushed golden stainless metal on the coat tree undergoes a specially heat-treated process, where the temperature is raised to 1800 degrees to achieve the distinctive golden tone.
This dedication to craftsmanship and detail ensures that each piece not only meets but exceeds our standards of excellence.
DNN: What was the biggest design or production challenge your team faced in bringing the collection to life? How did you overcome it?
AH: The Dome of the Niche Shelf Cabinet is crafted from hardwood and features a double compound curved design. This element was the most complex and challenging part of the entire collection.

After numerous attempts to perfect the carving technique, we finally developed a process that allowed us to achieve the intricate curves required for the dome.
This breakthrough in technique not only showcased our commitment to craftsmanship but also underscored our ability to overcome technical challenges to create truly unique and exquisite pieces.
Commercial meets collectible design
DNN: Collectible design is a growing category in the luxury furniture market. How does The Met Façade Collection fit into this space? As a manufacturer, what role do you see collectible furniture playing in the larger world of interior design and luxury living spaces?
AH: We have always considered each custom piece Abner Henry produces as a collectible. This is because we build and craft each piece with the expectation that it is made to last and be passed down to the next generation.

Every item we produce is crafted with this level of quality in mind. The Façade Collection continues this tradition, incorporating unique historical designs and generational techniques. These elements not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also ensure that each piece remains a treasured collectible for years to come.
DNN: Looking ahead, what can we expect from Abner Henry in terms of future collaborations, collections, or innovative design directions?
AH: We will continue to introduce products and designs that define our ethos. By eschewing a single branded style, we offer a wide range of styles—from true traditional to ultra-contemporary—and customizable options. This approach allows designers to curate their own distinct aesthetic, ensuring that each piece is tailored to fit their unique vision and preferences.
