(October 2, 2025 – Washington, D.C.) –– The American Society of Interior Design (ASID) has released its 2025 State of Interior Design Report, the third installment of its annual Outlook series sponsored by Sherwin-Williams. Covering salaries and wages to certification, employment, business growth, and services, the report provides a comprehensive view of the profession at a milestone moment in ASID’s 50-year history.
“As the leading design association for all sectors, ASID recognizes the importance of equipping our diverse membership with tools to succeed in an evolving marketplace,” said Khoi Vo, chief executive officer, ASID. “The insights in the State of Interior Design report help designers strengthen their practice today while preparing them to shape a stronger profession for tomorrow.”
Developed by ASID’s research team, the report examines the profession across three core segments: people, business and services. Key findings include:
- Employment: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), approximately 69,580 interior designers are employed across a range of industries. The 2025 Barnes Report estimates that an additional 56,449 interior designers are self-employed—a 3.4% increase year-over-year, compared to 4.1% the prior year.
- Credentials: As of October 2024, the Council for Interior Design Qualification (CIDQ) reported 17,447 active certificate holders, up from 16,539 in 2023. Since 1974, more than 38,000 certificates have been awarded. In spring 2024, 544 new certifications were awarded, representing a 14.3% increase from the 476 awarded in spring 2023.
- Compensation: The average salary for interior designers in 2024 was $71,430, a 2.1% increase from 2023. This stands in comparison to an 11.3% growth reported between 2023 and 2024.
- Firms: Although growth has been tempered by higher interest rates and market uncertainty. the number of U.S. interior design firms is projected to reach nearly 17,500 in 2025, a 3.4% increase from 2024.
- Payroll: Payroll for interior designers providing professional services is projected at $2.23 billion in 2025.
- Small businesses: Nearly half of payroll ($1.08 billion) and 75% of industry sales are driven by small businesses. In 2025, small business sales are projected at $30.9 billion.
- Sales by state: Five states—California, Florida, New York, Texas and Illinois—represent more than $15.8 billion in projected sales.
- Demand: While demand for interior design goods continues to rise, growth in services is expected to slow heading into 2026 due to elevated costs in new construction and renovation.
