An immersive installation exploring social spaces shaping affordable housing in Los Angeles
Venice, Italy and Los Angeles, CA (May 12, 2025) – An immersive installation titled The Angeleno Porch: Six Social Spaces Shaping L.A.’s Affordable Housing is featured as part of the U.S. Pavilion at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. A collaboration between Friends of Residential Treasures: Los Angeles (FORT: LA), architecture journalist Frances Anderton, and design studio Wyota Workshop, the exhibit contributes to the U.S. Pavilion’s PORCH: An Architecture of Generosity.
The Angeleno Porch follows the larger exhibition’s themes of civic engagement, community building, and social and environmental resilience through architecture and design, and examines how reimagined porch typologies within Los Angeles’s affordable housing foster community, connection, and cultural exchange. The installation presents six interwoven architectural elements – courtyard, staircase, walkway, bridge, terrace, and roof deck – each drawing inspiration from successful affordable housing complexes across Los Angeles.
Color-coded and framed by photographs of contemporary buildings with porch-like spaces designed by prominent Los Angeles firms, some images serve as doors revealing resident stories of communal life. The exhibit also honors early iconic Angeleno buildings that set precedents for today’s multifamily housing innovations.
Beyond its architectural components, The Angeleno Porch incorporates artistic influences and references to Los Angeles’s cultural identity, aiming to provide a multi-perspectival experience that celebrates the architects and developers working towards a more inclusive and livable city.
