Tribeca-based gallery Southern Guild has announced the first solo exhibition of Beninese artist Roméo Mivekannin, featuring two series, “Porteurs de feu” (Bearers of Fire) and “The Souls of Black Folk”. Mivekannin’s works challenge the Western art canon by subverting iconic historical paintings. In “Porteurs de feu”, he explores how the shaping of cultural memory through migration, representation, and acts of historical repair is achieved by inserting himself into portraits of artists who have influenced his practice. For “The Souls of Black Folk,” Mivekannin uses pages of the famous W.E.B. Du Bois’ 1903 work of the same name to create portraits of Black individuals across the Black Civil Rights Movement. Mivekannin’s works go on display at Southern Guild beginning September 6th.
Reed Smythe partnered with the Occitanie atelier Tanti-Baci Ceramics to create this Terre mêlée style vase. Crafted using the original 18th-century technique of blending different colored oxidized clay before firing, each piece possesses unique nuances making them one-of-a-kind.
Created in a spirit that brings us back to the days of landlines, The Laquer Company’s Miles Redd Son Mai lacquer telephone table captures the spirit of creative use. Handy for holding books, decor, and even playing host to a cocktail, it’s petite form is also easily moveable due to the ingenuity of wheels.
Baker McGuire’s recently expanded collection with Thomas Pheasant includes the Naxos dining table. Made with a sealed travertine top and a hammered texture steel base, we especially appreciate the top’s “pillow edge”, a carefully conceived element that softens the design.
Artemest by Gachot’s use of oxblood woven leather and a walnut base with a brass edge combine textures, materials, and color to create a uniquely purposeful and gracefully situated seat. Handcrafted in Italy and available in four superb shades.
A pedestal table that holds incense? We’re intrigued. Tamaa’s Oro pedestal table is crafted in lacquered wood with a metal base in a balanced, sculptured form. It’s centered bowl is designed with an incense holder, but the piece is also versatile and can be used to hold small decorative accents such as stones or shells as well as floral arrangements.
Tempaper & Co., founded by sisters Jennifer Matthews and Julia Au, announced last week its latest venture – 111 Mercer. Named for their childhood spent with their Aunt Kate, a renowned NY set designer, at that address, the line plays host to a number of murals and prints largely rooted in florals. Printed on grasscloths and sisals in various shade assortments, the collection is available strictly to-the-trade.
It’s rare to meet a metallic we don’t love, and Tile Club does it right with Struktura. Ridging and a glossy finish add dimension, while the gold adds a touch, or even a shout, depending on application, of glam.
Italian maker Lodes collaborated with Needs Studio to create the Tidal collection of ring-shaped lighting that shifts perspective based on its relation to the viewer. Available in two configurations and four finishes.
