Nestled into the sandstone ledge of a Los Angeles hillside, the Sheats-Goldstein residence blurs the lines between building, furniture and natural surroundings. Its bold triangular forms, sculpted from poured-in-place concrete, appear to grow organically from the landscape, maximizing city and hillside views through walls of glass.
There is sometimes a perception about the history of Los Angeles that would have us believe that native Angelenos – as in, families with well-established roots in the city – are few and far between. While it may be true that the City of Angels endlessly attracts new and diverse citizens, it’s not so difficult to find families with a deep generational heritage. Gunawan defines herself as a progressive architect. When people hear the term progressive architect they get intimidated. In her experience, people assume it means something technical and lofty, but she stands by the term. It means always improving, turning failures into opportunities. In practice that means building upon what already exists. This is the philosophy behind the name of her architecture design and build firm, The Only Way is Up.
The venture was born from designer Ginger Curtis’ own frustration while browsing for an Airbnb, unable to find a thoughtfully designed space that felt like a true experience. Everything felt dated, basirbanologyc, or beautiful in a photo but cheap and uninspiring in person. Ginger designed the first Urbanology Property to be the solution to that search.
