Returning to Design Miami for the first time since 2019, Joseph Walsh is delighted to present Context and Collaboration, a Special Project of the 20th edition of the fair. This presentation marks the US premiere of the international designer’s latest works in wood, in a dialogue with Irish ceramic artist Sara Flynn, following an acclaimed exhibition during Paris Art Week 2024.
Context and Collaboration will display five Enignum Wall Brackets and Vessels – blending wood and ceramics – alongside a free-standing Enignum Shelf with Vessel and two Novasedes Seats, weaving their creations into a poetic dialogue on material and form. This exhibition is a celebration of Walsh and Flynn’s continuous growth and innovative artistry.
Joseph Walsh’s ongoing exploration of form and material has consistently pushed the boundaries of craftsmanship and design. His works, known for their fluid, organic shapes, and meticulous attention to detail, reflect a deep dialogue between the natural world and human creativity. Developed over years of dialogue, collaboration, and research with engineers, universities, and foundries, each piece epitomizes the merging of craftsmanship and science, advancing material form and durability. Each piece is a testament to his innovative
techniques and dedication to expressing the inherent beauty of the materials he uses, perfectly complementing the nuanced craftsmanship seen in Flynn’s porcelain vessels.
Flynn’s work with porcelain showcases her mastery of the material, exploring new shapes and contours while maintaining a refined simplicity that reflects 25 years of experience. As a distinguished porcelain artist, she skillfully navigates the complexities of thrown forms, transforming them at various stages of the drying process into sculptural vessels. Treating porcelain as a white canvas, she allows for various colors and glazes that highlight the ceramic surface’s beauty, perfected through years of trial and error. In this exhibition, Flynn presents new works created specifically for the occasion, representing a culmination of her technical expertise and intuitive application. Each piece is a testament to her continuous growth, ensuring that it would not exist without the ones that came before it.
This collaborative journey between Walsh and Flynn began with their first group exhibition, Realisations, in 2008, and their works are also featured in the timeless collection of art and objects at Chatsworth House, UK.
